Famous for being a good base to explore remote areas of Patagonia, Coyhaique is considered the most important city on the Carretera Austral. From here you can make excursions to visit Lake General Carrera and the Marble Chapels, the Queulat Park located on the Northern Carretera Austral.

Mount McKay, rocky and crossed by trails, rises above the city. Pottery and wool items are sold at the handicraft market held in the main square. On the outskirts is the Simpson River, which is full of trout. To the west of the city, cougars and huemules live in the Simpson River National Reserve, with forests and the Virgin's Waterfall.
